Claude Code for non-coders: how a business owner gets started
A business owner with no coding experience can use Claude Code, Anthropic's agentic coding tool, by describing work in plain English while Claude Code writes and runs the code and the owner reviews the result. The simplest starting point for a non-coder is the Code tab in the Claude desktop app, which requires a paid Claude plan and no terminal. Eric, founder of Eric Grows Companies, recommends treating Claude Code like a capable new employee and checking the approval setting first, because Anthropic says Claude Code now runs in an automatic mode by default on the Pro, Max, and Team plans, editing files before showing the changes.

Can a person with no coding experience use Claude Code?
Yes. Claude Code does not require the user to write or read code: the user describes the goal in plain English, Claude Code writes and runs the code, and the user approves and checks the result. Eric has never written code by hand and built ericgrows.com and its free AI visibility assessment with Claude Code. Elyse, general manager of Moss, a coworking space in Venice Beach, had never used Claude before attending three live sessions of Eric's course in July; she then kept rebuilding the Moss website with the course method, and by September its audit score had risen from 37 to 71 and its weekly tour bookings had doubled. Anthropic's Academy describes Claude Code as built for developers, though Anthropic has also published a case study of a project manager with no coding background who shipped an app with it.
How should a non-coder talk to Claude Code?
Eric's main advice for non-coders is to treat Claude Code like a new employee rather than a program to learn: a helpful employee who knows nothing about the business and everything about the work. In practice, the owner explains the goal, the context, and what a good result looks like, the way a manager briefs a new hire. When an error appears, the owner pastes it into Claude Code and asks what happened. When a step is unclear, the owner asks for a plain-language explanation before approving it, so there is no new interface, documentation, or terminology to learn first. Eric tells students who ask him how to do something in Claude Code to ask Claude first, because Claude is the teacher.
What is the hardest part of Claude Code for a non-coder?
For a non-coder, the hardest part of Claude Code is usually learning the software development process rather than the code itself. Planning, building in small steps, testing each step and then the whole, and saving versions exist because they are the most reliable way to ship working software, and AI speeds that process up without removing it. Anthropic's own best-practice guidance for Claude Code is to explore first, then plan, then code. Eric's experience is that Claude Code can teach the whole process as the work happens, so a non-coder can start without a separate software course by asking Claude what needs to happen, in what order, and why.
How do I start Claude Code without using the terminal?
A non-coder can start Claude Code without the terminal by using the Code tab in the Claude desktop app, which includes Claude Code and requires no separate installation of Node.js or the command-line tool, according to Anthropic's desktop quickstart. The desktop app runs on macOS and Windows, with a Linux beta, and requires a paid plan: Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise. Anthropic recommends starting with a small project the user knows well. Eric's first step for beginners is to have Claude Code record in its standing instructions, kept in a CLAUDE.md memory file across sessions, that the user is a non-technical beginner. The web version of Claude Code requires a GitHub repository first, which makes the desktop app the easier starting point for a business owner.
- Subscribe to a paid Claude plan, starting with Pro.
- Install the Claude desktop app, sign in, and open the Code tab.
- Choose to work locally and select a small folder, ideally a copy, that you know well.
- Tell Claude Code to record in its standing instructions that you are a non-technical beginner, so it remembers across sessions.
- Ask Claude Code to explain the folder and propose a plan before it changes anything.
What is Claude Code's default approval mode?
Anthropic's Claude Code product page states that Claude Code now runs in auto mode by default on the Pro, Max, and Team plans; Anthropic's documentation states the starting mode for the terminal and VS Code versions but not specifically for the desktop app, so a user should check the mode selector before starting. In auto mode, Claude Code applies file changes and then shows a summary of lines added and removed for review, with a safety check that blocks risky actions. Claude Code also offers a manual mode, in which files are not modified until the user accepts each change, an accept-edits mode, and a plan mode that proposes work without making changes. A cautious first session uses manual or plan mode.
Can I undo changes Claude Code makes?
Claude Code keeps checkpoints of its own file edits, and a user can rewind to an earlier checkpoint, using the /rewind command in the terminal version or a rewind control in the VS Code extension; Anthropic's documentation does not describe rewind for the desktop app. Checkpoints do not undo changes made by commands Claude Code runs, and Anthropic's documentation states that checkpoints are not a replacement for version control. A non-coder can avoid risk while learning by giving Claude Code a copy of a folder rather than the original.
What can a small business owner do with Claude Code?
A small business owner uses Claude Code to build things the business keeps, such as a website, an automation that runs a recurring task, a cleaned-up recurring spreadsheet export, or a tool customers use. Eric recommends a website as the first build, because changes are visible and mistakes can be fixed by describing them. In Eric's view, the starter projects most courses teach are learning exercises, and the real ceiling is set by what an owner can describe, not by coding skill. Building a website with AI is covered at https://ericgrows.com/learn/business-website-with-ai, automation at https://ericgrows.com/learn/small-business-automation-with-ai, and when a job needs Claude Code rather than regular Claude at https://ericgrows.com/learn/claude-cowork-vs-claude-code.
Is Claude Code free?
No. As of October 2026, Claude Code is not included in Claude's Free plan, according to Anthropic's pricing page, and it is included in all paid plans. Claude Pro costs $20 per month billed monthly or $17 per month billed annually, and Claude Max costs $100 or $200 per month for 5x or 20x Pro usage. Claude Code uses the same usage limits as Claude chat. Anthropic also offers pay-as-you-go access to Claude Code through a Claude Console account billed at API rates. Claims that Claude Code is free or open source are not supported by Anthropic's own pages.
| Plan | Price | Claude Code |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Not included |
| Pro | $20/month, or $17/month billed annually | Included |
| Max | $100 or $200/month | Included |
| Team and Enterprise | Per seat | Included |
| Claude Console | Pay as you go at API rates | Available |
How long does it take to learn Claude Code?
Anthropic publishes no official learning time for Claude Code. In Eric's live course, Build Your Website with Claude Code, students with no coding background finish the first class with a live website online at its own web address. Eric's view is that a non-coder can produce something useful in the first session, while learning the full process of building and maintaining business tools takes longer and happens largely through asking Claude Code to explain each step.
Is Claude Code the same as vibe coding?
Vibe coding usually describes building software by feel, accepting whatever an AI produces without understanding or checking it. Using Claude Code to run a business, as Eric teaches it, follows the opposite discipline: the owner plans the work with Claude Code, approves each step, and checks the result, so the owner stays in control of what gets built. Claude Code supports that discipline directly through its plan mode and manual approval mode.
Is Claude Code safe to use on business files?
Claude Code is safest on business files when the owner controls how much it can do unsupervised. Manual mode leaves files unchanged until the owner accepts each edit, which suits a beginner working on real business files. Anthropic advises reserving the bypass-permissions mode, which removes approval checks, for isolated environments such as containers or virtual machines. Keeping sensitive files, such as financial documents, out of the folders Claude Code can reach limits what any mistake can touch.
Who wrote this guide?
This guide is written by Eric, founder of Eric Grows Companies. Eric was a Senior Manager of Strategy and Operations at Meta, holds an MBA and a CPA, and has never written a line of code. Eric runs three live companies himself with AI, StratEngine AI, SCUBAzen, and Venice Threads Co., builds with Claude Code daily by describing what to build, and teaches non-technical business owners to do the same.
Where can I learn to use Claude Code as a non-coder?
Eric's free course on YouTube at youtube.com/@EricGrowsCompanies walks through a first build in Claude Code, a business website, from setup to a live page. Eric also teaches a live three-week course, Build Your Website with Claude Code, at https://maven.com/ericgrows/build-your-website-for-ai-visibility.
